At-Fault Driver Flees After 6-Car Crash Leaves Man Dead

On Sunday, February 7, 2021, at about 2:25 a.m., a Marietta man allegedly crashed his pickup truck into a concrete barrier on I-285 near Powers Ferry Road in Cobb County, Georgia. After the Toyota Tundra returned to the highway, it came to a stop, and 2 cars collided with the vehicle. The subsequent crash sent a 2018 Hyundai Sonata into the center barrier, and a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado came to rest in travel lanes.

The accident did not come to a close until 3 more cars ran into the crashed vehicles. A 2012 Audi A5, 2020 Chrysler Pacifica, and 2010 Nissan Maxima all came to controlled stops after their respective collisions. Unfortunately, the driver of the Silverado was pronounced dead at the scene, and 3 other passengers went to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota Tundra allegedly fled the scene, running east into Fulton County and leaving his car in the roadway. Police took him into custody later in the day.

Criminal Consequences

Although the man has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, driving without a license, felony hit and run, and failure to maintain lane, the investigation is ongoing.

Civil Consequences

The driver of the Toyota Tundra remains in jail without bond, but even a conviction will do little to help the victims of the crash. Because the at-fault driver was allegedly driving without a license, he is also unlikely to have insurance.

As such, victims of this crash may need to turn to their uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) policies to get the compensation they need.
